We want to celebrate your home grown veg!

Have you ever been to our Harvest Festival in the Demonstration Garden? If so, you’ll know we usually have a feast of seasonal produce in our produce show. This year the Covid 19 pandemic means we won’t be having our usual Harvest Festival but we know you’ve been growing galore in your gardens during lockdown! So why not submit your produce ‘virtually’ instead? We have four categories open, and all you need to do to enter is email us photos of your lovely fruit and veg!

The competition opens immediately and closes at 5pm on Wednesday 30th September. Winners will be picked by our Community Gardener and Market Gardener and announced on Sunday 4th October, when we’ll also have some autumnal and harvest themed activities on at the garden from 1-4pm. Why not join us for that, too?

The competition categories are:

Individual entry

If your veg patch has been bountiful this year, why not enter? You may submit a photo of a selection of produce of different kinds, or multiples of one crop. Got ten amazing beef tomatoes? Great! Grown a selection of salad leaves and brassicas? That’s great too! Send them in!

Group entry

During uncertain times, you may have been pooling resources with relatives or neighbours. If you’ve grown crops as part of a collective (perhaps a community garden or on a shared piece of land near your home) you can enter as a ‘group entry’.

Young growers

Are you a young person under 18 who has been learning to grow food? Perhaps you’ve done a lockdown project in the garden as part of your home schooling? Send us a photo of what fruit and veg you’ve been growing.

Best wonky veg

Growing your own food isn’t about perfection. It’s about getting tasty, nutritious food that’s sustainable for the environment! For this reason, this year we want to celebrate your wonky veg! All fruit and veg is equal, but some are funnier than others…

How to apply

Simply email your name and produce photograph to community@rbge.org.uk, and include a few lines description if you’d like. We are looking for multiples of one crop or a selection of different crops. Please also tell us which category you are applying for, and your age if this is the children’s category.

Results will be announced in the garden at our harvest activities and on our social media channels on Sunday 4th October so please follow us on www.facebook.com/EdibleGardeningProject and www.twitter.com/EdibleGarden1 (we’ll also contact winners via email). Winners of the three adult categories will receive a copy of Jan Cameron’s new book ‘The Garden Cure’, kindly donated by publishers Saraband. Winner of the children’s category will receive a copy of an age appropriate book on gardening and growing.

GDPR notice: RBGE will only keep your name, email address and photographs for the duration of the competition, after which they will be deleted.

Good luck!

The Edible Gardening Project is kindly supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
