Scapania ornithopoides, the ‘Birds-foot Earwort’, was collected for the Darwin Tree of Life project by Dr David Bell and Dr David Long at the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve on the 22nd August 2021.
This large leafy liverwort grows on humid, rocky slopes in the mountains, especially in western Scotland, and in late snowbeds. Because it only grows in a specific habitat that’s only found in oceanic parts of north-western Europe, it is vulnerable to disturbance and climate change, and of conservation concern.
