Since 1956 RBGE has been an official weather station for the Meteorological Office, with observations being made at 9am everyday.
The current weather station was established here in 2011 when it was updated with automated equipment, and moved here from the more sheltered Demonstration Garden. The automation of these measurements has meant that the readings are more accurate and standardised across other sites. Measurements are still taken manually from the Campbell-Stokes recorder for sunshine hours, which is sited on top of the Temperate Palm House. This also serves as a vantage point for monitoring visibility, wind direction and speed.
