A fine specimen of the evergreen Lomatia hirsuta is awash with flower in the Chilean area to the north of the front range of glass. A multistemmed tree with a broad spreading habit. The individual flowers are at their most attractive as the corolla tube splits along its length to reveal the enclosed vermillion style tube before each tepal splits apart separating into four with fused anthers. The flowers are held in loose racemes and are a greenish white in colour, attracting a myriad of pollinating insects as they open. Fringe from the Greek, lomas, the seed has a fringed edge.
