Works on the Temperate Palmhouse to repair the glazing bars and replace broken glass has reached the halfway point. The North and East elevations have been completed and the next stage is the relocation of the internal scaffolding to the West and South elevations to facilitate further repair works. The RBGE maintenance team pulled out the stops to complete the first stage on schedule and to a high standard prior to the festive break. It is hoped that the next phase of works will follow a similar route in order to allow full unrestricted access to the internal spaces as soon as possible.
Through the repair process the team has uncovered concerning deterioration to the glazing frames which required cleaning, rust treatment and even welding works. Whilst the work undertaken is in no way a full refurbishment, tackling specific areas of damage only, it will hopefully buy some critical time until the Biomes project commences in earnest.
