Scottish Bluebell ,Campanula rotundifolia

For the year of Natural Scotland, RBGE has launched the Big 5 survey to find the nations favourite plant, tree or shrub. We have short listed popular plants and trees for some inspiration but there is also a chance to vote for any other tree or plant of your choice. Will you vote for The Scots Pine? Scottish Primrose? or the Spear Thistle? In the last post we wrote about Sally Heron’s choice of plant, Rowan.

In this post we have asked our Curator at Logan Botanic Garden Richard Baines to tell us what he voted for.

Scottish Bluebell  (Campanula rotundifolia)

The Scottish Bluebell carpets the ground in a sea of Delft blue campanulate bells and has a soft enduring scent not unlike a hyacinth. Whatever the weather it never fails to perform with minimum maintenance and in my opinion it is a very  wise plant as flowering time generally represents the start of summer!
