Tucked away in the upper woodland garden and easily missed is Magnolia sargentiana. Not as prolific a flowerer as Magnolia ‘Charles Raffill’, the flowers it does produce are just as spectacular. The tepals have a purple hue, paler shade within the cup. Introduced by Ernest Wilson in 1908 from his travels in SW China.
