Hilltop Viewpoint

The hilltop view point is sited at the highest point of Benmore (137m above sea level) and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Holy Loch. A memorial shelter to Sir William Wright Smith, a former Regius Keeper of RBGE, provides shelter for those wishing to take in the views.

The shelter was rebuilt in stone in 1989, replacing an earlier wooden structure. This stone shelter was designed by the grandson of the architect Robert Lorimer – the man who designed Puck’s Hut (the Isaac Bayley Balfour Memorial). Wright Smith was responsible for bringing to fruition Bayley Balfours vision of a west coast garden, completing the acquisition of the garden from Harry Younger, and beginning the long process of transferring Rhododendron seedlings from the garden and nursery at Edinburgh.
