There are several Rhododendron species and cultivars flowering out of season this autumn. At this time of year the buds should be initiating for the spring 2018 flowering. It will be interesting to see if the growth can support these flowers and a prolific display in spring. Rhodendron fletcherianum has creamy yellow petals and prominent flower parts protruding the calyx. The foliage is unusual in that the edge of the leaf is serrated in the upper part, a good identification feature. Named after Dr Harold Fletcher, a former Regius Keeper at RBGE; 1956-70.
