The overnight freeze left a myriad of ice crystals covering the garden this morning. The coldest day yet this year at -3.1 °C. These during and after images of Hamamelis mollis’Pallida’ show the frozen flowers on the stem at sunrise, the coldest time of the morning. As the sun rose bright sunshine thawed these with no detriment to colour or structure due to the papery nature of the narrow lemon yellow coloured petals. By early afternoon in the cold still air they were even throwing out their delicate perfume.
