Growing on the south facing wall of the glasshouses in full sun is Clematis henryi. Found growing naturally at forest margins, on shady slopes amongst shrubs and along streams through China from 200 – 2500 metres. Yet here in the Garden quite content to grow and flower prolifically in full sun. It is a woody climber with dark green lanceolate leaves, that have not enjoyed this winter’s weather. The four sepals are a creamy white, ribbed and reflexed. A prominent green anther protrudes above the ring of multiple anthers. Highly scented although not pleasantly.

Clematis henryi
