The flowers of Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus are delicate in composition, resembling silk threads. The plant is a short lived perennial sending flower stalks up to 180mm. These petals, in shades of pink, are cut and etched in fine feathered patterns and add to the delicate appearance of the bloom. A group of prominent, extended stamens form the centre of the flower. Mentioning Mulberry leads on to the White Mulberry, Morus alba, our mature tree, growing on the west boundary has produced a crop of small, sweet to taste, fruit this year. This is the species cultivated for leaf production to feed the silkworm industry. A native to China where the greatest silkworm cocoon production is concentrated.
